Too much social media can be harmful, but it’s not addictive like drugs

The term “social media addiction” is being increasingly used to describe people who spend a lot of time on these websites. Obviously, it's not healthy and it can cause all kinds of harm such as a decrease of self-esteem or a heightened awareness of how we think other people judge us. However, there are important differences between social media use and substances in terms of addiction, making it not as addictive as drugs. In my opinion, too much social media use is for sure a huge problem, especially for younger people but it makes no sense comparing it to a drug, alcohol or tobacco addiction. The side effects of social media use are a lot less harmful. Moreover, it hasn’t yet been established that there are physical withdrawal effects when people stop using social media. By contrast, the withdrawal of drugs is often physically unpleasant and sometimes dangerous without medical supervision. https://theconversation.com/too-much-social-media-can-be-harmful-but-its-not-addictive-l...

Living near water can be beneficial to your mental health

We know that people are more likely to experience mental health disorders in areas with greater population density. Overcrowding, pollution, urban violence, and less social support may all be contributing factors, and this is becoming more of a challenge as more people around the world move into towns and cities. So far, studies show that people living near water have a lower risk of premature death, a lower risk of obesity, and have better mental health. In my opinion, living near water seriously has a positive impact on life, because I personally felt better when I was spending my time nearby a lake or sea. Furthermore, when you live near water it’s most likely you will go outside and do some activities. I know it’s hard to see a lot of water bodies especially in big cities but there’s still some space where we could build artificial ones to improve residents’ health. https://theconversation.com/living-near-water-can-be-beneficial-to-your-mental-health-heres-how-to-have-more-...

Tobacco killed 500,000 Americans in 2020

Tobacco use killed an estimated 500,000 Americans in 2020, about the same number the pandemic killed in one year. Although education efforts by the government and nonprofits have helped to curb tobacco use, 14% of American adults still smoke, even with warning labels on the packages. Tobacco deaths are so high that the World Health Organization calls smoking an epidemic. In my opinion tobacco addiction is a huge problem and it obviously shouldn’t be swept under the rug. Many people consider a permanent smoking ban a perfect solution but I think it would trigger many negative effects such as high displeasure among smokers. Instead, we should put even more effort into teaching young people about the negative consequences of smoking because almost every heavy smoker started his “adventure” with cigarettes in their adolescence. https://theconversation.com/tobacco-killed-500-000-americans-in-2020-is-it-time-to-control-cigarette-makers-153611
