The Black Death

The Black Death was one of the greatest disasters in history- a plague which in six years killed over 30% of Europeans.

The plague started in China in the 1330s and it arrived in Europe in 1347 at the Sicilian port of Messina when 12 ships from the Black Sea docked and because of rats, in a short amount of time the plague spread on the whole Europe. Medieval Europe wasn't prepared for the epidemic. In those times medical knowledge was so poor that doctors were powerless to stop it and they even couldn’t find what was the cause of the plague so people started to believe that this was a punishment from God.

Symptoms of the plague were fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, terrible aches and pains but the biggest problem was that in contrast to the modern epidemic, the mortality rate of the black death was unbelievable high.

The black death was definitely one of the most important events in history. In few years it killed over 25 million Europeans, ruining the entire economy. But thanks to this, people finally started to pay attention to hygiene what led to the improvement of medicine.

  1. People wore masks, for example. But the true revolution in hygiene came a few centuries later.
