In 1860 Abraham Lincoln, a member of the antislavery Republican Party was elected as the 16 th US president. Slavery was a very important part of the southern economy because it was based principally on large farms (plantations) that produced commercial crops such as cotton and that relied on slaves as the main labour force so when antislavery politician-Lincoln was elected, 11 southern states(in chronological order, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina) decided to secede from the United States and form the Confederate States of America. Just one year later the war between the Union states (23 states) and the states of the Confederacy broke down. The North was more developed and populated than The South so after 4 years of deadly battles Lincoln and his army managed to win. War of Separation was the most lethal American conflict in history.
