Too much social media can be harmful, but it’s not addictive like drugs
The term
“social media addiction” is being increasingly used to describe people who
spend a lot of time on these websites. Obviously, it's not healthy and it can
cause all kinds of harm such as a decrease of self-esteem or a heightened
awareness of how we think other people judge us. However, there are important
differences between social media use and substances in terms of addiction, making
it not as addictive as drugs.
In my opinion,
too much social media use is for sure a
huge problem, especially for younger people but it makes no sense comparing it
to a drug, alcohol or tobacco addiction. The side effects of social media use
are a lot less harmful. Moreover, it hasn’t yet been established that there
are physical withdrawal effects when people stop using social media. By
contrast, the withdrawal of drugs is often physically unpleasant and sometimes
dangerous without medical supervision.

I'm not so sure the negative effect of over-dependence on social media are so harmless: anxiety, depression, self-harming, eating disorders. All the them can potentially kill you.
